Sausalito, CA Real Estate
Homes, Condos, Houseboats
Tom Verkozen has specialized in Sausalito real estate and homes for over three decades. This is a town he loves and frequents ... you'll often find him at Le Garage, a French restaurant by the water, or Fish, another by-the-water restaurant.
Sausalito, the first town on the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, is one of my favorite and I do a lot of business there … whenever I can slip away you’ll find me enjoying a cappuccino at Café Trieste (now renamed but not in my mind).
With a 2000 census population of 7330 … living 4254 households, about 10% of the households being houseboats, and a median family income of $123,467 this is Marin’s most eccentric town … a town with a rich history, lots of art, artists, writers and even boasting the one and only Sally Stanford (former madam, mayor and owner of the Valhalla).
Big water and bay views, micro climates that include ‘hurricane gulch’ and ‘banana belt’ as descriptors, a ferry terminal and a big art scene … these are features of a town that has three sets of occupants … the hill folk, the tee shirt people (commercial district, not only tee shirts but fine restaurants, cafes and art) and the water folk (divided into unreformed former anchor-outs, yacht clubbers and kayakers).
Ah, Sausalito … where the commute to SF is short, the fog frequent and the views magnificent … in 2010 there were 90 sales, 40 condos sales, 50 home sales, with the homes averaging a bit above the $1.6M mark … of the 90 sales, eight were bank owned (RE0s) and nine short sales … the least expensive sale was a 525 square foot condo on Stanford that sold for $230,000 and the most expensive a 10,000 square foot home on Harrison that sold at $6.8M.
An element that has recently sprung to life in Sausalito is a great school, Willow Creek Academy. Check it out!
